When the person comes back he finds that it was only Holmes. After Holmes makes his presence felt he fooled everyone by saying he was going the next day.

The next day he orders Sir Henry to walk home after eating at Mr.Stapleton?s house. That night when Sir Henry was walking home Watson and Holmes wait outside of the house when the fog started to roll in. When they heard the footsteps of Sir Henry when out of the fog comes a huge hound. The hound attacks Sir Henry when Holmes and Watson both shoot the dog. That night they search the house but only found his wife tied up. The next morning the wife told them the way but all they found was the missing boot of Sir Henry in the bog.
